Until recently, Korea's scientific community has been hesitant to engage with the creationists, fearing that doing so could give the movement more credibility. The silence is no longer an alternative.

What is Evolution?
Evolution is a theory of science that explains the evolution of genetic characteristics of living organisms over time. The theory is based upon the fact that living creatures adapt to their environment, which may lead to variations in genes or whole genomes. These changes could over generations lead to the emergence of new species. The most popular theory of evolution is known as natural selection, which explains the process by which people with advantages survive and reproduce more frequently than those with disadvantageous characteristics. In time, this disparity in reproduction could lead to the emergence of completely new species.
The word "evolution" originates from the Latin for revealing or unrolling, has been used in a variety of different ways as the concept has changed in both science as well as elsewhere. Early evolutionists like Erasmus Darwin (Charles’s grandfather) and Jean Baptiste de Lamarck believed that species were predetermined to change into another species. The term transmutation was coined by the Lamarck's disciple, embryologist Etienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire to describe this view. Charles Lyell, in his Principles of Geology, published in 1833, criticized the concept of evolution and borrowed the term from Geoffroy's student.
Evolutionary biologists define evolution more recently as a process through which living creatures develop traits to improve their chances of living or producing offspring. In time the genetic variability could lead to the emergence of completely new biological functions or physical traits in the same population. Natural selection is the mechanism that triggers the majority of evolutionary changes. Changes that are not genetic, like an increase in muscle mass due to exercise or diet, cannot be considered to be evolution since they aren't passed down to future generations.
Creationists have a tendency to use the argument that evolution is controversial, even though it has been proven to be valid by a multitude of scientific tests and it has stood the test of time. They claim that the concept should not be taught at school. In South Korea, creationists won a few victories against evolution in textbooks for high schools. This includes the removal of all references to the evolutionary roots of humans and Archaeopteryx which is a feathered dinosaur believed to be the bird's ancestor.
Why is Evolution Important to Humanity?
Evolution is the explanation for the origins of Earth and all living species. It is also a foundation of biology that helps scientists comprehend how living organisms operate and develop. Evolution also shows how different species are interconnected. Scientists study evolution to better understand the natural world and to make useful discoveries, such as developing new treatments.
The evidence for evolution is overwhelming. No other scientific theory explains more about the universe and the life on our planet. It has been thoroughly studied and verified for many years. Many people, including religious leaders, believe in the scientific theory of evolution. It is essential to remember that evolutionary biology doesn't conflict with religious beliefs as it only addresses physical objects, events and processes.
Many religious people have come up with a way of reconciling evolution with their beliefs. Certain Christians for instance, believe that God created everything through evolution, and that humans share an ancestry that is shared with other animals.
It is crucial for scientists to support the teaching of evolution. In some countries, the anti-evolution movement has been rising. In the United States, efforts to limit the teaching of evolution have made some progress in some states. In South Korea, a group called the Society for Textbook Revise, an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research (KAC) is a campaign for textbooks that cover the evolutionary history of horses and their avian ancestor Archaeopteryx.
Although these are alarming developments, it is also important to remember that the evidence for evolution is overwhelming. The evidence for evolution is based on a variety of sources, such as fossils, genetics, and even the behavior of living creatures. The evidence is also independently verified by other scientists.
The vast majority of scientists support the theory of evolution. This belief is based on various reasons. Some scientists are studying evolution to make practical discoveries, such as developing new drugs and other treatments, while others use it to improve animal and plants species, typically to benefit humans. Some scientists are simply curious, while others have an intense belief in God.
What is Creationism?
Creationists are people who believe that God created the universe and everything in it. They also believe that the Bible is the word of God and should be taken seriously. While not all creationists are Christian, they are a majority. Creationists generally fall in one of two categories: Young Earth creationists (YEC) and old earth creationists (OEC).
YECs are the most well known form of creationist, and they believe that God created the world in the exact way described in the Bible. YECs hold that the biblical account of the six days of creation was true and that the universe and the life on Earth were created only recently.
OECs may be less well-known However, their beliefs are as passionate like those of YECs. OECs believe that the universe and Earth are billions of years old and that evolution is a lie.
Both forms of creationism deny that scientific principles such as biogenesis and natural selection could explain how life started on Earth. They claim that evolution is impossible because it would require the creation of a miracle, and the scientists who founded modern science rejected miracles out of fear of losing credibility.
Some creationists accept naturalistic evolution and also special creation. They consider their views to be "theistic evolution.” It is sometimes referred to as "continuous creationism" or "evolution from created kinds." This theory states that God creates species from scratch and then allows them to evolve over time. These evolutionary changes eventually will result in new species that are similar to the original.
Other creationists hold that God created the universe and all living things during a single event, called the Great Flood. They believe that the original species were all created at the same time, and that they grew slowly afterwards. They deny the notion of abiogenesis, and argue that self-replicating life cannot arise from non-living matter.
In general, creationists oppose teaching evolution in schools. Numerous professional organizations, such as the National Science Teachers Association and the Association for Science Teacher Education endorse this view, as do the American Anthropological Association and the Geological Society of America. Certain scientists and educational institutions are however more flexible and allow both creationism and evolution to be included in their curriculum.
What exactly is Creationism in Korea?
When people think of creationism, many of them think of the United States. South Korea also has an anti-evolution group. The publishers of textbooks for high school students have recently announced that they will remove references to evolution from their textbooks. The Society for Textbook Revise, an independent organization that is an offshoot from the Korea Association for Creation Research (KACCR) has been the driving force behind this effort. STR has won its first victory by removing instances of the evolution of the horse and an avian ancestor, the Archeopteryx in textbooks. Its next target is to eliminate portions of Darwin's notorious finch-research as well as on human evolution.
STR claims to have the support of 4,000 families as well as individual members. Its goal, it says is to cleanse the world of what it calls "atheist materialism" that paints an unflattering image for students. It also hopes to combat the influence of American Creationists in the United States. A survey of students in biology revealed that a majority of them didn't believe in evolution. The causes are not clear, but could include religion or the absence of creation scientists in the country.
The KACR has achieved many things in the past through seminars and lectures. It has a bimonthly news magazine, Creation, and has published books. One of them was a textbook on natural science that had a creationist perspective. This led to an interest in the college community. In 1991, a professor, along with a minister began teaching Creation Science at one university. It is still taught to students today.
On August 6 and 7, 1993, KACR hosted a second International Symposium on Creation Research. The event was held in conjunction with the opening of the World Expo in Daejeon. Six lecturers from outside the country, including ICR's John Morris and Steven Austin, spoke to thousands of people. KACR and its members have been giving lectures on creation science at major seminaries as well. KACR intends to establish a Creation Science Education Center.
